Kerala theater owners object to screen controversial film 'Kalimannu'

Kerala theater owners object to screen controversial film 'Kalimannu'

Acclaimed Director Blessy's latest flick 'Kalimannu' has been in the news since the project was announced. The film deals the relation ship between a pregnant women and her unborn child. Shwetha Menon plays the lead role in the film who was pregnant in real life when they began shooting Director Blessy who is always known for capturing images as real as possible wanted to film the delivery of Shwetha for real and use it in the film instead of her enacting the scene. Both Shwetha & her husband agreed to it beforehand. Eventhough the news was made public much before filming began it was only after this particular scene was shot the controvorsey blew out of proportion.

This public had mixed reaction about this. Many celebrities, politicians, including women condemned the act. Many even went to the lengths of ridiculing Shwetha and her family. The theater owners then said will screen the movie only after censor procedure has been completed. The film was censored last week and got U/A certificate without any cuts. But now the theaters owners have come up with a new demand that they want a special preview of the film before its release which will be watched by certain people or members of organizations who objected the release of the film. Only if they gives the film a 'green chit' they will co-operate with the release of the film.

But Kerala Film Chamber said this is the decision of a few in the Theater owners organization and there is no official ban and will provide full support to the film passed by Censor Board.

Mohanlal did a full monty for Blessy's award winning film 'Thanmathra' which even though passed by Censors felt the wrath of audience, back in 2005. Due to negative reactions to the scene he had to chop down those after day 1.

What happens when Siva, a happy go lucky guy who hates commitment & marriage, meets a girl with similar characteristics Anjali is the story of 'Sonna Puriyathu'. A story which can be told in one line, as short film has been stretched to a feature film length to test the viewers. The director looks confused whether to take a rom-com or a silly comedy caper or a spoof like 'Tamil Padam' which made the hero a household name [the hangover which all his role since then carries] - SP looks a holy mess of all these genres which is rarely entertaining.

Siva is the saving grace of the movie. It was just because of him that I sat through the entire run time. He is a pleasure to watch, as always. But its high time he took a different path, only if he wants to - most of the characters he do looks similar. Its one strange film where the heroine's friend looks more pretty and appealing than the heroine. But Vasundara has done a very good job in acting/expressions department. The rest of the cast are passable.

Camera work looks Okay. Music is disappointing. Background was disappointing, just copied from similar films, nothing innovating. Editing was good. But everything gets ruined by lasy writing/Direction or both combined  The script was suited for a TV Series/TV movie - just a set of interconnected gags which hardly raise laughter.

Being a Siva fan I expected more, found Thillu Mullu more entertaining than this.

Unless you are a die hard Siva fan, can very much give this film a miss.

Sonna Puriyathu, Paathalum.......

Disappointing

Story

A Class V student is given an assignment to frame 101 questions. The film is about the kid's journey to frame those questions and his  its answers. There is also a story running parallel to it, of the kid's father, who loses his job as a factory employee . The two parallel streams converge at the end as each of the '101th question' is unfolded before us.

101 Chodyangal is directed by Debutant Director Sidhartha Siva [noted actor, comedian & host]. The film has won awards for best children's film & best child artist (Male) at Nation Awards 2012-13. Minon, for his impressive debut, also won best child artist (Male) awards at Kerala State Film Awards & Kerala Film Critics Awards.

'101' chodyangal is a simple story story told in a simple manner. After TD Dasan & Manjadikkuru another film that tells the story of kids, based on his POV. It is a must watch movie for Parents & especially Kids. It may not be entertaining, might not have crass comedy, mass songs, over the top action but it has got a soul and is pure from the heart.

Debutant Siddarth has done a nice job, without going the art house way told us an entertaining and thought provoking story. All the actors have done very good job, especially Minon. Just one song in the movie. Music & BG are passable, not something we look forward to in such a film. Camera work was okay, but could have avoided some cliched/ unnecessary shots. Editing is good, it doesn''t lag at any pont with a runtime of under 3 hours.

Please take your kids to movies like these

Verdict: Good
